    Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend to a friend

    After having used both Tomy and Baby Bjorn carriers I assumed I knew what I was doing when the Hauck arrived. However, upon taking it out of the box for the first time I was amazed at how complicated it looked - straps and buckles everywhere! In saying that, everything looked strong and well stitched - something that is obviously very important and I was confident it wouldn't undo itself mid walk! So onto trying it on - it took some serious spatial awareness just to figure out if it was the right way up. After looking over the instructions and trying different positions, I got the hang of the sling and got it all fitted on my front. I liked the rigid backing as this felt more sturdy and substantial than the Baby Bjorn, which had just a bit of padding between me and the baby. My first main complaint other than the number of straps and buckles, was that once it was on, I was unable to adjust the back shoulder straps - the manual suggested I tighten these once the sling was on - but I couldn't reach them. I'm no contortionist, but I'm relatively flexible! So my wife had to do this for me. Not great for a parent wanting to go out on their own. Next step - putting our 5 month old daughter in it. She is just over 15lbs but is quite tall for her age. The Baby Bjorn original fits her perfectly. Sadly, the Hauck did not. Even at the largest setting, I felt he was sitting way too high and was not secure - the bit that's meant to be just below her chin was at the bottom of her chest - meaning if I leaned over she'd be at risk of falling out! We tried adjusting the straps again and she still wasn't comfortable. Considering it is meant to accommodate babies much larger I was disappointed. Due to discomfort and upset caused trying it on the front we did not try it on my back. I'm sure this will fit many babies fine, but for our daughter, it was not suitable, simply because it didn't fit - or if it did and I had just adjusted it wrong, that's still a failing as that would suggest it was overly complex.
